CARDBOARD RISD STUDENTS
On RISD’s campus there’s a little patch of grass known as the beach. In many ways this space serves as a stage with RISD’s eccentric students as actors. One day I photographed all the people sitting on the beach and printed them out as life-size cardboard cutouts and reinstalled them early the next day. I waited incognito across the street as Providence woke up and discovered this odd scene.
It was really exciting to sit and observe how people responded to my simple installation. I watched as a family took a photo with a cutout of a stranger, people took selfies, and an entire drawing class came outside to draw as the model sat amongst my cutouts. Interestingly, people who came to the beach to sit by themselves all gravitated towards the cutouts. Maybe there’s still comfort in the company of another person even if they’re made of cardboard.
